Ibnu Abi Shaybah, on the authority of the Companion of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Jabir ibnu 'Abdillah رضي الله عنه, narrates:

عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ: «كَانُوا لَا يَقْتُلُونَ تُجَّارَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ»

Merchants of the polytheists would not be killed (i.e. as a general rule).
